Risk of Untreated Insomnia

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) notes that about 1 out of 10 adults have insomnia that interferes with daytime functioning. For example, they may have difficulty concentrating, less energy to do things, or trouble with errors while managing tasks.

Chronic insomnia can also have a negative impact on your health, increasing your risk of depression, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and more.

What Are The Symptoms of Insomnia?

Symptoms of insomnia may include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Staying asleep
  • Memory problems or poor judgment
  • Feelings of depression
  • Waking up too early
  • Difficulty concentrating

Insomnia symptoms are often subjective. Many people experience something called sleep state misperception, which simply means they fall asleep faster or spend more time asleep than they perceive.

VirtuOx provides convenient at-home testing that enables physicians to formally diagnose and determine the severity of insomnia, so that a proper treatment plan can be implemented.

Can insomnia be treated?

Many people with insomnia self medicate with over-the-counter supplements. Others are prescribed medications to treat their insomnia. Those treatments can often help but are associated with adverse side effects and long-term risks. People taking sleeping pills may have a three-time higher risk of early death².

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an alternate treatment that has been proven to help treat insomnia without medications. CBT-I helps you change actions or thoughts that hurt your ability to sleep well. It helps you develop habits that promote a healthy pattern of sleep.

VirtuOx has partnered with dayZz to offer its sleep improvement app that delivers real-time contextual coaching. With the dayzz app, you’ll get a personalized sleep training plan tailored to your needs and lifestyle based on cognitive behavioral therapy.
